Choosing a compatible sea water pump does not simply mean finding a product that looks similar to the pump currently installed.
Engines from the same manufacturer, even when apparently identical, may use different pumps depending on the model, production year, application and marinisation system.
To avoid ordering errors, several essential details should therefore be checked before selecting a replacement pump.
The engine manufacturer and power rating alone are not sufficient to identify the correct pump with certainty.
What Is a Sea Water Pump Used For?
The sea water pump draws water from outside the vessel and delivers it to the engine cooling circuit.
An incorrectly identified pump, insufficient flow or a damaged impeller may reduce cooling efficiency and cause the engine temperature to rise.
Possible consequences
- insufficient water flow at the exhaust;
- engine overheating;
- inadequate heat exchanger cooling;
- premature impeller wear;
- water leakage from the pump;
- installation problems caused by different ports or mounting flanges.
What Information Is Required to Identify a Compatible Sea Water Pump?
1. Engine Manufacturer and Complete Model
.The engine manufacturer and full model designation should always be provided.
Examples:
- Cummins 6BTA;
- Caterpillar 3306;
- Volvo Penta D4;
- Perkins M92;
- Onan MDK;
- Kohler 33EFOZ.
A general description such as “Cummins engine” or “Volvo Penta engine” is not sufficient.
2. Engine Serial Number
The serial number helps distinguish between different versions, production years and configurations of the same engine model.
When available, we also recommend sending a clear photograph of the engine identification plate.
3. Part Number of the Installed Pump
Check the pump body, cover and identification plate for any stamped or printed part numbers.
The number may belong either to the pump manufacturer or to the engine manufacturer, for example:
- JMP;
- Sherwood;
- Jabsco;
- Johnson Pump;
- Volvo Penta;
- Cummins;
- Caterpillar;
- Onan;
- Kohler.
Even a partially readable part number may help with identification.
Which Photographs Should Be Provided?
When the part number is unavailable or unreadable, photographs become particularly important.
We recommend sending:
- front view of the pump;
- side view;
- mounting flange and fixing holes;
- inlet and outlet ports;
- shaft, gear or drive system;
- identification plates and stamped numbers;
- photograph of the pump while it is still installed on the engine.
Photographing the pump before removal also helps verify the position of the ports and the way the pump is installed.

Specify the Type of Application
The same engine base may use different pumps depending on the application.
Please specify whether the pump is installed on:
- a propulsion engine;
- a generator set;
- an auxiliary engine;
- a multi-purpose system;
- an engine marinised by an external manufacturer.
This information is particularly important for industrial engines that were subsequently marinised.
Pump Fitted as Original Equipment or Compatible Replacement?
A compatible pump should not merely resemble the pump fitted as original equipment.
It must meet the mechanical and hydraulic requirements necessary for the correct operation of the engine and cooling system.
Details to Check
| Feature | What to check |
|---|---|
| Mounting | Flange, fixing holes and hole spacing |
| Drive system | Shaft, gear, pulley or drive coupling |
| Rotation | Required direction of rotation |
| Ports | Position, diameter and connection type |
| Overall dimensions | Overall length and available installation space |
| Flow rate | Capacity required by the cooling system |
| Impeller | Compatible model and dimensions |
Checks Before Replacing the Pump
Before ordering a new pump, it is advisable to check that the reduced water flow is not caused by other components in the system.
Check the sea water intake, strainer, hoses and any possible obstructions. Fragments from the old impeller may also accumulate inside the heat exchanger or pipework, reducing water circulation.
These checks help avoid replacing the pump when the problem is actually caused by a dirty strainer, a collapsed hose or an obstruction in the cooling circuit.
We will check the availability of the pump fitted as original equipment or of a compatible solution suitable for your application.
