R&D – Torsional Dampers for Marine Applications

Marine torsional dampers are essential components in power transmission systems, designed to absorb torsional vibrations and protect the drivetrain between engine and gearbox.
They improve reliability, reduce noise and ensure smoother operation.

During engine operation, torque fluctuations generate dynamic loads that can damage transmission components.
Torsional dampers absorb these stresses, reducing wear and extending the lifespan of the system.

  • Absorbs torsional vibrations
  • Protects gearbox and drivetrain components
  • Reduces noise and shock loads Improves system durability
  • Ensures smoother operation Ready for installation on flywheel
  • Suitable for a wide range of applications

Torsional dampers are used in marine propulsion systems as well as in other power transmission applications, particularly where high torque variations and low-speed operation are involved.

Marine torsional dampers are widely used in applications where reliability and vibration control are critical.

How to identify the correct torsional damper

To select the correct damper, it is necessary to measure key flywheel dimensions.
These data are often not available in technical documentation and must be verified directly on the component.

flywheel measurement diagram

Required dimensions:

  • D = outer diameter
  • d = fixing diameter / PCD
  • Ø Holes = holes diameter

In addition to dimensions, it is essential to know the engine torque (Nm).
If this value is not available, the following data must be provided:

  • Power (HP / kW)
  • Speed (RPM)
